Essex - Lecture and Lunch at Chapter House
Essex - Lecture and Lunch at Chapter House
Join Cambridge Society of Essex for lunch, and hear from Stuart Laing, MA, M.Phil on 'The Middle East: can the wounds be healed?'
The Middle East has for long been the focus of attention of world politicians – and sadly, also the location of much violence and destruction. This lecture will offer an explanation of the background to the area’s current troubles, and an opportunity to consider how the future might be shaped. Stuart Laing, an alumnus of Corpus Christi College and until recently Master, had a first career in the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office, serving twice in Saudi Arabia, in Egypt, and as Ambassador in Oman and then in Kuwait. He has published a history of the relationship between Britain and Oman (Unshook Till the End of Time) and a biography of the 19th century ivory trader Tippu Tip, and continues to research, write and lecture on African history and Arab politics.
Coffee will be served from 11am; talk 11.30am-12.30pm, with time for questions; lunch will commence at 1pm.
