The 2021 summer Freshers' Events series has now ended and we are not currently recruiting volunteers. Please visit this page again next summer to register as a volunteer for the 2022 series.

Freshers' Events

  • The University Alumni Engagement team is recruiting current students and recent graduates to help at Freshers’ Events taking place around the world in August and September 2021
  • Hosted by Alumni Groups, these events are a great opportunity for new students to prepare for university and make some friends before the start of term
  • Much of the success of Freshers' Events is down to the current student and recent graduate volunteers recruited to share their experiences of Cambridge with attendees
  • It works particularly well when volunteers attend an event in their own home town, region or country

Why volunteer for this role?

  • You will be one of the first to welcome the 2021–22 intake of new students to Cambridge
  • Having been there yourself, you know that starting university can be daunting, but your friendly welcome and useful tips are likely to make a direct and considerable difference towards helping incoming students feel reassured and better-prepared for university
  • Volunteering will enable you to meet other students and alumni

Time commitment

  • Volunteers are asked to attend at least one Freshers’ Event in August or September 2021
  • Events are in-person or online, depending on local COVID-19 restrictions and organiser preferences
  • The majority of events are about 2-hours long and take place over a lunchtime or evening
  • Once you've registered your interest, if there's an event confirmed in your area, we'll provide you with full details about the event. At this point you can choose whether to accept or decline the booking

Key responsibilities

  • You will mingle with attendees, sharing your experiences of university life and answering questions
  • You might be asked to briefly introduce yourself at the start of the event and participate in an informal question-and-answer session
  • Your help with setting up, packing up and registering attendees might also be appreciated
  • Responsibilities vary from event-to-event. Once you've registered your interest, and if there's an event confirmed in your area that you would like to attend, we will ask the organiser to tell you what's involved
  • Note: we ask that you direct attendees to their College, Faculty or Department for information about what the academic year will look like during the coronavirus pandemic. Please do not attempt to provide such information yourself, due to a high-risk of misinformation being communicated to attendees

Skills

Register your interest

  • Register your interest by completing a short online form, to add yourself to our list of potential volunteers. The link to the form will be available on this page in the early summer of 2022
  • If there's an event confirmed in your area, we'll contact you with full details, at which point you can either accept or decline the booking
  • If you accept the booking, we will share your name, College, course, year of matriculation and email address with the event organiser, who is a former Cambridge student. The organiser will then contact you by email to confirm what's involved and answer any questions you may have. By accepting the booking, you consent to us sharing this information with the event organiser
  • If you do not hear from us, it's because there isn't an event in your area
