Parlour Talk

On Thursday, April 27, San Diego alumni and friends gathered at the Mangelsen Gallery in downtown La Jolla, CA for a parlour talk on 5G communications from Dr. Svetislav Maric (Sidney Sussex Fellow 1995), UCSD Extension, Director of Engineering and IT.

Dr. Maric stressed the immense challenges of going from the current communication speeds in the mid-10s of Megabytes/sec to as much as 20 Gigabytes/sec. He also discussed the need for total reliability, as one of the main applications will be for driverless cars. These cars must communicate directly, continuously, and faultlessly with each other and everything around them but without communicating via a base station. Roll-out in the 2020 timescale is anticipated, though partial roll-outs before then are possible.

Following the talk, the group adjourned for a casual dinner at The Spot restaurant.

St. George's Day Celebration

Alumni and friends gathered at St. Paul’s Cathedral, where the Very Reverend Penny Bridges (Clare 1976) is Dean, in downtown San Diego for the annual St. George’s Day celebration. Following a procession around the cathedral, led by the Cameron Highlanders Pipes and Drum Band, choral evensong was celebrated with inspiring music by the choir, organ, and trumpeters. A highlight was the singing of "Jerusalem," which always brings a tear to the Anglophile eye.

The celebration was followed by a sumptuous tea in the Great Hall of the Cathedral.

Bots and Beer

On Thursday, May 4, San Diego alumni and friends participated in an evening of networking and drinks at a reception with roboticists from seven of the UK’s leading universities. Attendees learned about UK research in robotics, as it pertains to healthcare.

The event, organized by the UK Government Office in partnership with IEEE San Diego Section was held at the Rough Draft Brewing Company.

Thanks must go to David Pasquini, Consul, Government and Prosperity, UK Government Office in San Diego, for organizing and hosting such an enjoyable and informative evening.
