How to survive exam season: a student’s guide

Student advice on dealing with exam stress

Fashions and food fads come and go but exams are as much a part of student life as freshers' week, formals and end of term festivities.

Whether you sat exams fifty years ago or five years ago, the sleepless nights, the summer days spent in the library and overly-ambitious revision timetables will seem all too familiar. We asked students who sat exams this season, Courtney, Dylan, Lina, Timi, Sujina and Reiss, what their advice is for managing revision and staying healthy. Watch the video for their tips.

Taking regular naps, cooking for yourself, practising mindfulness, getting enough exercise - it’s clear that there are lots of different ways to stay on top of exam stress, it’s about finding what works for you.

Second-year land economist Dylan (St Catharine's) says: “Focus on yourself, we’re all individuals and everyone has different habits, everyone has different motivations - all you can do is focus on what motivates you, what gets you going and how you work best.”

Support from friends is also key, as third-year lawyer Sujina (Fitzwilliam) explains: “We’ve got a safe space in our communal kitchen so we put down things on the whiteboard that stress us out and, when we’re in the kitchen, people take care not to mention those things, like training contracts, exams or revision timetables.”

And it’s not just students who are coming up with ways to help relieve exam stress. From CUSU’s recent Art for Mental Health event to academics championing mindfulness to Colleges providing animals to pet during revision breaks, the Cambridge community as a whole works together to help students through exam season.
