Cambridge goes for Gold in Rio 2016
Cambridge has left its mark on the world's greatest sporting competition in Rio 2016. Over the years Cambridge has notched up 189 Olympic medals and this year is no exception with George Nash (St Catharine's 2008) winning gold in the rowing men's four and Tom Ransley (Hughes Hall 2007) getting his hands on a gold in the men's eight.
Competitive rowing has been at the heart of the University's sporting life and Cambridge rowers have traditionally found success at the Olympics with Trinity College alone producing 11 rowing gold medallists over the years. Here's the lowdown on our gold medalists this year:
George Nash (St Catharine's 2008)
Rower: men's four
Date of birth: 2 October 1989 (26 years old)
Club: Molesey BC
Height: 1.94m
Hometown: Guildford
George, a Blue in his student days, had previously struck gold at the FISU World University Rowing Championships and has been a World Champion at U23 and Junior level. While studying engineering at St Catharine’s College, George competed in three Boat Races – winning in 2010 but losing in 2011 and 2013. He was also President of Cambridge University Boat Club.
Tom Ransley (Hughes Hall 2007)
Rower: men's eight
Date of birth: 6 September 1985 (30 years old)
Club: Leander Club
Height: 1.96m
Hometown: Ashford
Tom won a bronze medal at the London 2012 Olympic Games and has two World Championship titles as well as European gold. Also a Cambridge Blue, Tom is now in his eighth season with the senior GB men’s squad. He completed a postgraduate course in History and Management Studies at the University.
