Tribal and Sacred China
A journey through Laos, Yunnan and Tibet
Departing: Tuesday 15 October 2019
Returning: Tuesday 5 November 2019
Duration: 22 days
There can be few journeys more awe inspiring than ascending from the jungle lowlands of Laos, through Yunnan Province (‘South of the Clouds’) with its stunning variations in flora, fauna and ethnicity, to the spectacular mountains of Tibet dotted with beautiful palaces and ancient monasteries. This is a region with some of the most important minority peoples in Asia whom over the last few generations have been marginalised into these remote mountains and border regions.
In Laos, take a beautiful northern road, through endless rice paddies and lush jungle to the misty mountains of the Hmong hill tribes. Here enter China with the Himalayan foothills beyond and pass through bamboo forests and dense tea plantations to the ancient towns of Dali and Lijiang. Rolling terraced hills give way to jagged snowcapped peaks as one ascends into the Tibetan world of Shangri-La and the medieval and sacred capital city of Lhasa.
- Visit the beautiful and remote mountain village of Shaxi in Yunnan.
- The wonder of the great Potala Palace in Lhasa
- Travel on one of the world’s greatest and highest train journeys from Lhasa to Beijing
