Alumni and guests are invied to join the Cambridge Society in Nottinghamshire and guest speaker Catharine Arnold, for a lecture on the 1918 influenza epidemic and lunch at the Belgrave Rooms.

In the last months of the First World War, Spanish flu suddenly overwhelmed the globe, killing up to 100 million people. It was one of the most devastating disasters in world history. In this talk, Catharine Arnold draws on eye-witness accounts of the tragedy and the stories of those who fought back, at the Front, at home, in the hospitals and laboratories.

Catharine Arnold is a member of the Society, whom many of you will know. She grew up in Nottingham and read English at Girton. She is a popular historian and author of Necropolis: London and its dead and Globe: Shakespeare and the English Stage, among other titles. She has a further degree in psychology and teaches creative writing for the Open University.

She is currently Sheriff of Nottingham and represents the Basford ward on Nottingham City Council.
