Oxford and Cambridge Club of the Philippines
The Oxbridge Club is an organization of graduates from Oxford University and Cambridge University who reside or work in the Philippines.
The Club was formally organized in 1974 by five Oxbridge graduates – Jose Romero Jr (Trinity, Cambridge), Antonio Araneta (Lincoln, Oxford), Alfonso Aguirre, Salvador Gonzales and Duncan Keith Maslin. It used to meet at the then Manila Boat Club. However, the meetings were not regular and there were years when there was no activity at all. In 1986, the Club was “revived” when Philip Romualdez (Trinity, Oxford) organized a get-together party in honour of two Oxford professors.
The activity that followed was a formal dinner organized by Jose Romero, British Ambassador Keith Gordon McInnes (Trinity, Cambridge and Roque Portugal (Christ Church Oxford and Magdalene, Cambridge) in 1989. In mid-1996, British Ambassador Adrian Charles Thorpe (Christ’s, Cambridge) hosted a get-together party for the members. Between 2003 and 2005, there were small group meetings among Araneta, Romero, Portugal, Jake Lagonera (Wolfson, Cambridge) and David Kaufman (Keble, Oxford).
In the November 2005 meeting among Romero, Araneta and Portugal, it was decided to bring Romuladez at the helm of the Club’s organization and activities. Since then, Romuladez, together with the British Ambassador, has been leading the Club and organizing various activities at least twice a year.
