Prague - St Martin's Day dinner
Friday 11 November 2022, 7.00pm CET
The Oxford and Cambridge Alumni Society, Czech Republic, invites you to join them in celebrating St Martin's Day.
St Martin's Day is soon upon us. It is a key event here, less perhaps because it celebrates Bishop Martin of Tours and more because it gives an opportunity to eat a marvellous leg of goose. But do you know why goose is eaten on St Martin's Day? There are two versions of why, the first being that at that time (4th Century France) animals were kept in churches in times of emergency and the loud geese tended to interrupt the saintly Bishop's sermons, and the other being that whilst on the run he hid in a stable and was betrayed by the cackling of geese. In any case tradition has it that he got his revenge by eating one of them. Why so much historical detail? Well that's what you get for electing a Historian as President....
We have arranged traditional fare on the menu including traditional Kulajda soup of potatoes, poached egg, dill and roast bacon, roast leg of young goose (of course!), complete with apple-flavoured red sauerkraut and potato dumplings, a selection of desserts and of course St Martin wine.
