Four Perspectives and a Funeral: the burial of Czechoslovakia at Munich 1938 Lecture by Pierre Caquet
The September 1938 Agreement was the final milestone in appeasement. Chamberlain famously proclaimed ‘peace for our time’ on his return from the Munich conference, while Daladier only muttered: ‘les imbéciles, s’ils savaient ce qu’ils acclament!’ The Czechoslovaks knew all along. As for the Germans, they were not as united behind Hitler as is sometimes believed. Pierre Caquet, author of the recently-published The Bell of Treason: the 1938 Munich Agreement in Czechoslovakia, will present these differing perspectives and explain how they made possible the tragedy that was Munich.
Guided tour of the museum and exhibitions at the Polish Library Drinks and Book Signing
The Polish Library is a little-known Parisian gem. Prior to the lecture, the curator to the Polish Library, Anna Czarnocka, will conduct a guided tour around the charming museum and the two exhibitions in the Polish Library. Wine will be served following the lecture. Pierre Caquet will be glad to sign any copies of the book The Bell of Treason which you wish to bring.
