Malvern - Talk by Dr Henry Connor
Malvern - Talk by Dr Henry Connor
Alumni and guests are invited the join the Society of Hereford and Worcester for a talk by Dr Henry Connor - "Dr Henry Graves Bull (1818-1885), Hereford Physician, Naturalist and Philanthropist", followed by lunch.
For many years Henry Graves Bull (1818–85) was the leading physician in Herefordshire and, as a naturalist, antiquarian and historian, he was one of the founding fathers of the Woolhope Club and the driving force during its early years. He was regarded nationally as the founder of field mycology. As a devout Christian his strong sense of moral and social responsibility made him one of the city’s most important philanthropists.
Our speaker Dr Henry Connor studied Medicine at Caius College Cambridge and at the Westminster Medical School in London. After qualifying, he worked at the Westminster Hospital and then at the Radcliffe Infirmary in Oxford, where he also held a Medical Research Council Fellowship. He moved to Sheffield as a University Lecturer in Pharmacology and Therapeutics before going to Hereford as a Consultant Physician in 1979. Since retiring he has pursued a long-standing interest in the history of medicine and holds an Honorary Research Fellowship in the History of Medicine at the University of Birmingham.
The Cotford Hotel is a well-appointed family-owned establishment. It is where we held our successful Six Boffins talk by Mike Burstow on 27 October last to a full house. The standard of cuisine is high. Drinks may be purchased at the bar before lunch.
