Members are invited to join the Cambridge Society of London for an exclusive tour around the British Museum.

Take a tour through the history of Britain and the world at the British Museum.  We are lucky to have one of the best museums in the world in our midst but, let's be honest, when did you last visit it?  The tour will cover some of the "must see" highlights of the British Museum such as the Rosetta Stone, the key to unlocking hieroglyphs, and the Parthenon Sculptures (also known as the Elgin Marbles), considered some of the most beautiful achievements of Greek art.

The Society will then visit ancient Rome at the start of the Empire to see masterpieces of Roman art, including one of the "raciest" items in the Museum collection (previously deemed pornographic!).  We will also explore less well known civilizations, such as the Assyrians, through the monumental sculpture and beautiful palace reliefs they left behind.

Lastly they will take a whirlwind tour through British history, from Roman silver tableware, via Anglo Saxon burial objects to the Norse influence on the medieval world as seen in the Lewis Chessmen, inspiration to JK Rowling!

The tour will be lead by Caroline Piper, a London Blue Badge Tourist Guide, the highest tourist qualification available and a University of Cambridge History graduate.
