 Alumni and guests are invited to join the Suffolk Cambridge Society for a visit to the University of Suffolk, Ipswich for a talk by the Vice-Chancellor, Helen Langton, followed by a buffet lunch. After lunch, you will be able to visits 'The Hold' - The new home of the Suffolk Libary.

The meeting will be held in The Hold on the University of Suffolk site. The Hold is the new Suffolk Archives building in Ipswich which will hold the bulk of Suffolk’s nationally and internationally significant records. The University of Suffolk is one of the newest Universities in the country being officially launched in 2016. The history however goes back to the Tudor period, when Cardinal Wolsey established Cardinal College (now Christ Church College, Oxford), for which he planned a number of feeder colleges; the main one of which was to be in Ipswich. Some 500 years later, Suffolk has, at last, got its own University.

The University is growing rapidly offering undergraduate and post-graduate degrees in many disciplines and is becoming internationally recognised in several areas. The visit will also be an opportunity to look around The Hold and see the exhibition by PlanetMark in the atrium area on the UK’s zero carbon commitment as part of the run-up to COP26 in Glasgow. You may also want to take the opportunity for a walk along Ipswich’s historic waterfront. As this will be our first event after the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions, we have taken every precaution to make sure that this will be a ‘Covid-safe’ visit. A full refund will of course be given if you or your partner/guest have to self-isolate or Covid restrictions are re-imposed.

The programme for the visit is;

  • 10.30am: Meet for tea/coffee in The Hold. We recommend using Duke Street car park (satnav: IP3 0AQ) which is a pay and display car park about 200 meters walking distance from The Hold. The parking charge is £5.50 for all-day parking.
  • 11.15am: Talk by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Helen Langton, about the formation of the University and its plans for the future.
  • 12.45pm: Buffet lunch of assorted sandwiches, quiches, tea/coffee, fruit juices.
