Hereford - 'The Americans in Kington in WW2'
Hereford - 'The Americans in Kington in WW2'
Alumni and guests are invited to join the Cambridge Society of Hereford and Worcester for a lecture by Mrs. Mari Fforde titled 'The Americans in Kington in WW2'.
Mrs. Mari Fforde is a local historian living near Hay-on-Wye and is currently involved in the Hay Castle Trust. A few years ago, she was intrigued by the remains of a very large World War 2 American Camp near Kington and decided to embark on a research project to find out more. There were two large hospitals in the camp in anticipation of injuries on D Day. General Patten visited the Camp which included black American personnel.
With the help of local sixth formers, Mari established contact with some of the veterans and even acquired some film footage of the Camp which she will show during the lecture. It is a fascinating story that she has discovered and will share with us. Mari read History and French at Sussex University and is a Founder Member and treasurer of the Hay History Group. The study and promotion of local history and heritage are her passions.
