Gloucestershire - Tour of Berkeley Castle & Dr Jenner’s House
Gloucestershire - Tour of Berkeley Castle & Dr Jenner’s House
Alumni and guests are invited to join the Gloucestershire Cambridge Society for a Tour of Berkeley Castle, Gardens and Butterfly House and Dr Jenner’s House and Museum.
Berkeley Castle is a splendid location: the third oldest continuously occupied castle anywhere. It is an architecturally fascinating building in its own right, of course – and is crammed with fine historical artifacts, such as Drake’s sea-chest, Queen Elizabeth’s bedspread. Not to be missed, of course, is the very dungeon where Edward II came to a horrible end. The Gardens are a joy, showing the hand of Gertude Jekyll a century ago, and the Butterfly House is pure magic, with 42 exotic species, from as far afield as Japan and Indonesia, flying freely around you in a tranquil tropical oasis. Our tour will be very special.
After a light lunch in The Castle’s “Yurt Tea Rooms”, we shall stroll across to Dr Jenner’s House, Museum and Garden. This is a striking Grade II* listed house where Edward Jenner lived for 38 years until his death in 1823. It is where he pioneered vaccination against smallpox, one of the pivotal events in world history. Again, a stimulating tour, in delightful grounds – we can even relax in the Temple of Vaccinia!
If you’ve never been to Berkeley, or if it’s been ages since you last went, do come along. You’ll definitely enjoy the experience.
