The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) is one of two large detectors installed 100m underground at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the world's largest and most-powerful particle accelerator. In 2012, it was in the LHC that the Higgs particle was first observed. This winter, the CMS will be open for maintenance, allowing a good view of the innards of this 14,000 tonne, 15m diameter and 22m long detector.

Our tour will start before midday at CERN, which means that if you start in and return to Zurich Hauptbahnhof, it is an all-day trip (eg 8am to 8.30pm). You will be able to buy a quick lunch in the CERN canteen.
