Alumni and guests are invited to join the Cambridge Society of Dorset for a talk by Professor David McKitterick. He graduated from St John’s College and followed with a Diploma in Library Science at University College London. He worked at the Cambridge University Library for many years and has been a Fellow of both Darwin and Trinity Colleges. He was Vice Master at Trinity from 2012 to 2016 and was elected a Fellow of the British Academy in 1995. He has been intimately connected with the development of books through the digital revolution, and indeed from earlier times. Readers, publishers, and authors alike are today facing the greatest revolution since Gutenberg’s invention of printing. It is affecting everyone’s budgets, even as it brings both advantages and challenges. David will draw on his experience of publishing and as an author to consider how both in the fifteenth century and in almost every generation since people have faced the need to adjust to changes. In print, manuscript and e-publishing alike there have always had to be compromises as different media develop alongside each other.
Bryanston’s usual splendid 3-course sit-down lunch will complete the day.
