Bishop Auckland - NCA Summer Outing, 2023
Bishop Auckland - NCA Summer Outing, 2023
For many centuries, Bishop Auckland was a thriving market town but since the demise of the mining industry, it has been affected by an economic and social decline. The Auckland Project is a regeneration charity working to establish Bishop Auckland as a heritage visitor destination. Through historic attractions, galleries, nature, food, events and stays, The Auckland Project brings the rich and surprising story of Bishop Auckland to life.
Parking for the day is available at the North Bondgate car park (£3.50). From there, it is a short walk to the cafeteria in Bishop Auckland town hall (to left of Building 3 on the map at https://aucklandproject.org/plan-a-visit/), where we will gather for refreshments from 10:00. After 10:30 we will visit the newly opened Spanish Gallery, the Mining Art Gallery (Buildings 9 and 3 on map) and then gather for lunch in the Bishop’s Kitchen in Auckland Palace. After lunch, we will have a tour of the refurbished palace/castle (2). After these visits, time and weather permitting, there will be an optional walk in the Deer Park (4).
