The Russian North
This trip is fully booked.
A Journey from St Petersburg to Moscow
Departing: Sunday 8 September 2019
Returning: Sunday 15 September 2019
Duration: 8 days
This is a unique opportunity to journey through the ‘unchanged’ Russian north – explore historic and picturesque Russia, undamaged by world wars or Soviet industrialisation. To travel through these towns is to discover a slice of rural Russian life in the raw – a chance to glimpse the medieval Russian spirit reaching upward from mud to glory, shaped by centuries of conquest and threat. This journey offers hundreds of years of rich Russian history written in stone and wood as local inhabitants
looked over the battlements to hostile horizons, while within their Kremlins, craftsman created beautiful churches and adorned them with exquisite carvings, frescoes and icons. For many, this is where the true soul of the country lies, quite different to Russian city life, juxtaposed with great wealth and squalor. But the cultural supremacy of Moscow, however, cannot be underestimated and the party will explore this great capital.
- A chance to witness the resurgence of orthodox faith after nearly a century of atheism and communist rule
- Visit the immense 14th-century Kirillovo Belozersky monastery
- Option to extend journey with a pre-visit to St Petersburg
