London, CamSocTalks: John Russell Taylor, cultural critic and eclectic collector
Formerly art critic of The Times, Taylor was renowned for his lightly worn erudition, his breadth of knowledge across art, film, theatre and literature, and a prose style that combined authority with warmth and generosity. A prodigiously early talent, he published his first paid criticism at just 13, graduated from Jesus College, Cambridge in 1960 with a double First in English and went on to write more than 20 books, including the celebrated authorised biography of Alfred Hitchcock. A passionate and precocious collector, Taylor acquired works from childhood onwards, guided by an exceptional eye and a phenomenal memory. His wonderfully eclectic collection ranges from Neo-Romantics and Vorticists to illustrated books and theatre designs, offering a rare and intimate insight into a lifetime spent immersed in the arts.
