Justinian - Holy Emperor, Demon King
Justinian - Holy Emperor, Demon King
Justinian was in many ways the greatest of Byzantine emperors, who created many of the monuments that still dominate the historic heart of the city of Istanbul.
In this lecture, Professor Sarris will talk about his recent prize-winning biography of Justinian and his legacy.
Professor Peter Sarris is Professor of Late Antique, Medieval and Byzantine Studies at the University of Cambridge. He has published extensively on the history of the Early Middle Ages both East and West, and is a leading authority on the 'Plague of Justinian' and the 'Age of Justinian' more generally. His latest book JUSTINIAN: EMPEROR, SOLDIER, SAINT (Basic Book, 2023) is a Sunday Times, London Evening Standard, and BBC History Magazine 'Book of the Year', and has been awarded the prestigious London Hellenic Prize (2023) for the best book published in English relating to, or inspired by, Hellenic civilisation.
