The visit to Little Germany planned to take place before Covid will take place on Sunday 10 September.

Little Germany is the area of Bradford where German immigrant wool merchants built their warehouses. Most of these buildings remain today though their use may have changed. A significant number of these merchants arrived in Bradford during the course of the nineteenth century. They played a considerable part in the cultural and philanthropic life of the city, as well as local politics. The names of two of their descendants will be familiar to you, Frederick Delius and William Rothenstein.

Our walk will take around an hour and will be led by Nigel Grizzard, local historian with 20 years’ experience of leading guided walking tours.

Sunday has been chosen as the day to visit as car parking and general circulation are much easier. Nigel will meet us by the statue of Forster at 11.00am, just outside the entrance to Marks and Spencer, which is in the Bradford Broadway shopping centre. Cashless and ticketless car parking is also available in the Broadway Centre (postcode BD1 1JR).

It is suggested that we return to Marks and Spencer for coffee afterwards. Anyone who wants something more substantial will find the cafe does hot dishes as well. Bradford has other attractions, in particular the Bradford Industrial Museum, that can be visited on Sundays. (Note: the National Science and Media Museum is closed for refurbishment and will not reopen until summer 2024).

Nigel has promised to make the tour as user-friendly as possible avoiding steep slopes, etc. He also recommends wearing comfortable footwear!

Alumni, family and friends are very welcome.
