Dr Elizabeth English began meditating as a student in 1983. Three decades later, she was appointed as Cambridge University’s first ever Mindfulness Practitioner. Her courses are the subject of research published in The Lancet showing significant benefit to students, and are now also offered more widely online (www.elizabethenglish.life). Elizabeth draws on four decades of personal meditation practice and her ordination within a Western Buddhist tradition, as well as her doctoral research at Oxford, where she studied Buddhist meditation texts. She is also a certified teacher of Focusing, Somatic Experiencing and Nonviolent Communication. She spends much of her time singing and writing, both poetry and prose. Her first ‘gentle guide’ to meditation was published this year: Journeys to the Deep: A Gentle Guide to Mindfulness Meditation. 

Practicing Mindfulness: Introduction and Refresher Course (Monday evenings)

Monday 7 to Monday 27 November 2022, 7.00-8.30pm, Online

Mindfulness weaves its magic into every day life. This 4-week mindfulness course will give you a thorough grounding in how to apply it to everyday life, giving you the fundamentals of mindfulness and meditation. Each week includes a meditation and exploration of a mindful theme. In the first week, we explore what it means to keep calm. In week two, we explore the nature of attention, and how to improve it. In the third week, we apply mindful awareness to making productive decisions (including procrastination and inner conflict). In the fourth week, we discover how mindfulness can support your sleep. By the end of this course, you will have learned to meditate in ways that feel enjoyable and enriching for you. The course will be interactive, and you will have the benefit of interacting with a small group of other interested learners.

A Gentle Guide to Mindfulness Meditation (webinar)

Sunday 6 November 2022, 4.00-6.00pm, Online

The practice of mindful meditation lies at the heart of mindfulness. This two hour webinar is an ideal way to approach meditation for the first time, or to re-fresh and embed your practice. It's particularly useful if you find your mind 'too busy' to meditate, or you feel that you often fail. We explore how to 'meditate as you can, not as you can't' – finding flexible and creative approaches, so that your meditation becomes precious and enjoyable 'time for you'. You are also invited to read Elizabeth’s book alongside this session, 'Journeys to the Deep: A Gentle Guide to Mindfulness Meditation'.
