You are invited to join us as we hear from Dr Dean A. Irwin (Visiting Fellow, University of Lincoln; Visiting Fellow in Anglo-Jewish Medieval History, Oxford Centre for Hebrew and Jewish Studies)

During the twelfth and thirteenth centuries Lincoln was home to a substantial and vibrant Jewish community. Richly documented, we can access the Jewish community of Lincoln in a level of detail that often is not possible elsewhere.

This talk will take a single Jewish property in Lincoln (12-14, The Strait) and explore the experiences of its owner had he stood on his own doorstep during the 1250s and early 1260s. In doing so, it will draw upon recently published rabbinic responsa (legal opinions on Jewish law), the records of central government, charters produced in that very house, and narrative sources. The talk will illustrate the level of integration and co-operation, which characterised life in medieval Lincoln. These are properties that are still standing and occupied today.
