Our Society is particularly pleased that Stephen Chater has agreed to give a talk to Members on the History of St Mary’s Church, Stoke d’Abernon. Not only is Stephen an accomplished historian, he is also the co-author of the current guidebook to the church, which is the oldest church in Surrey.

Stephen read Modern History at Christ Church, Oxford before practising as a solicitor, including almost 25 years at the international law firm of Allen & Overy. In retirement, he is a City of London tour guide, a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Glaziers and Painters of Glass, Chair and Trustee of two heritage charities and frequently gives talks on a wide range of historical subjects.

Coffee will be served from 10:30am in the Café Anteroom of St Mary’s Church Hall, which is a short walk from the Church itself, and the talk will take place in the Church at 11am.

Access to the Church and the Church Hall is by turning from Stoke Road into the gates of Parkside School. Parking is available after passing the school parking area, and following the road to the right, leaving the Church on the left and passing beyond the Church Hall on the right.
