The Chained Library is the jewel in the Minster’s crown.

One of only five surviving chained libraries in the country and formerly the Minster’s Treasury, for over 300 years it has been home to about 480 books dating from the 14th century, the majority being 17th century, and a mixture of the religious and the secular.  It is one of the earliest public libraries, access not being limited to the Minster's clergy.  Mike and Jayne will tell us the history of the library and describe with illustrations many of the fascinating books contained in it.

Coffee or tea will be available, and after the talk there will be a hot buffet from a wood burning oven followed by a selection of cakes.
