Our world is connected by increasingly complex supply, financial, trade and production networks. Global shocks, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine, expose fragility in these networks, and complex supply chains have amplified local shocks. Mapping supply and production networks to test their robustness to external shocks is essential for both governments and firms to mitigate vulnerabilities before they can be exploited. Professors Vasco Carvalho and Matthew Elliott (Faculty of Economics) take a systemic view of these complex networks to investigate the economic impact of external shocks to supply chains.
