Lighthouses are more than just tall towers with flashing lights.  They are symbols of hope, courage, and navigation. They have a rich and fascinating history that spans centuries and continents. They often faced challenges from storms, wars, and even pirates. Lighthouses are historical witnesses of wars, wrecks, rescues, and adventures. They inspire stories, legends, art, and culture. Our expert speaker, Mark Lewis, will present a fascinating illustrated history of lighthouses, drawing on over 40 years of study and experience of this subject.

Our speaker:

Mark Lewis a freelance artist, designer-silversmith and retired university lecturer.

A former Principal Lecturer in the Sir John Cass Department of Art, Media and Design at London Metropolitan University, he lectures part time at the Goldsmiths Centre in London and is a visiting lecturer at Birmingham City University.

A keen pharologist, he is an active member of the Association of Lighthouse Keepers and a founding member of the World Lighthouse Society. He has also been an active member of the Folklore Society since 1987, with a particular interest in unusual local customs and rituals. In 2013 he published a book on the folklore and popular customs of the church. Mark is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Horners.

Please join us at Tyrrells Wood golf club to hear all about this fascinating subject, and enjoy an excellent lunch, and, of course, stimulating Cambridge alumni company.

Tea and coffee will be served from 10.30am.

The presentation will commence at about 11.00am and will be followed by a Q&A and a 2-course lunch. There will be a pay bar. The event will finish at about 2.30pm.
