Join us in September for a Tour of Ludlow Castle, Lunch and Talk with Philip Hume of the Mortimer History Society.

Guided tour, meeting at the entrance to Ludlow Castle from 10:40 for 11:00, Ludlow Castle, Castle Square, Ludlow SY8 1AS followed by lunch and a talk in the Beacon Room of the castle’s excellent ‘Chapter 66’ restaurant. All information including payment details are included in the booking forms found in this email.

Philip Hume’s lunchtime talk will provide an overview of the history of the powerful Mortimer family, lords of Ludlow from 1307. It will be illustrated with photographs of the other castles, churches and artefacts in south Shropshire and north Herefordshire associated with the Mortimers.

Philip is a retired senior local government officer, a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London, and the Secretary of the Mortimer History Society. He is the author of ‘On the Trail of the Mortimers’ (2016), ‘The Welsh Marcher Lordships: Central & North’ (2021), On the Trail of the Mortimers in the Welsh Marches’ (2022), and co-author of ‘The Ludlow Castle Heraldic Roll’ (2019).

Accessibility: 

Some areas of Ludlow Castle are inaccessible to wheelchair users and can be difficult for people with mobility issues.  The surface areas are cobbles, grass and chippings.  Most rooms have steps.   

The restaurant is accessible to wheelchair users, as is the Beacon Room where lunch will be held and the talk will take place.  Disabled toilets are available in the shop and in the restaurant.

PARKING: There is no parking at the castle; close by, however, is the car park just off Castle Square (see map).  Access to this car park from the south is across the river, through Broad Gate and up Broad Street, then left; or from the north via Corve Street and King Street.  Tower Street is not a through route.  

There is a larger car park off Tower Street, reached via Station Drive or Lower Galdeford.
There is also a Park & Ride service operating from the Ludlow Eco Business Park, just off the A49 towards Sheet.  The nearest postcode for GPS is SY8 1ES
