Harrogate - Lecture by Dr Phil Judkins: 'Cambridge's Worth'
Harrogate - Lecture by Dr Phil Judkins: 'Cambridge's Worth'
Dr. Phil Judkins' talk, "Cambridge's Worth", will tell the story of how far British achievements in radar (which enabled British victories in the Battle of Britain and the Battle of the Atlantic) were dependent upon Cambridge alumni and alumnae. The title is itself a pun: British radar research was carried out at Worth Matravers, Dorset, during 1940-1942, and while the talk will refer to matters scientific, it will be presented in a non-technical form for a general audience. Both British and German equipment from his personal collection will be on display, and Phil warns us to expect many surprises – this will definitely not be the ‘same old’ oft-repeated story!
Dr. Judkins is currently Beaufort Visiting Fellow at St John's College, enabling him to research the work of that college, and Cambridge alumni/ alumnae, on radar from 1935-45; this gives members of the Cambridge Society the chance to contribute to this research should they so wish.
