A lecture and lunch will be held on Sunday 14th April at the same location as in previous years, the Harrogate Club by kind invitation of John and Alison Harris.

The Sound of the Classical Guitar - Mr Graham Wade
The talk, which will be highlighted by recordings, covers the unique sonorities of the unamplified classical guitar from the playing of Andrés Segovia (1893-1987) to the present day. In a historical period of extremely raucous popular music, the intimate voices of the classical guitar still attract the ear and captivate the imagination.

About the speaker
Graham Wade, writer and musician living on the East Yorkshire coast, studied English at Jesus College, Cambridge, is a Fellow of Trinity College of Music, London, and was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in 1982. Graham was formerly Head of Strings and Senior Lecturer in
guitar at Leeds College of Music and Tutor in Guitar to the Universities of Leeds and York. His publications include biographical studies of Andres Segovia, Joaquin Rodrigo, Julian Bream, and Gina Bachauer, books on guitar history, aspects of musical form, two novels and his collected
poems 1956-2019.

He has been an external examiner in guitar at a number of leading music colleges and an adjudicator for international guitar competitions in the USA, Germany, Ireland, Greece, Spain, and the United Kingdom. From the 1960s until 2002 he fulfilled many performing engagements throughout the United Kingdom as well as playing recitals in Spain, Scandinavia, Holland, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Kuwait, Canada, etc. During these years a number of solo pieces were
dedicated to him by various composers, as well as five concertos which he premiered. His concerts included a shared recital with Malcolm Williamson, Master of the Queens Music, and performing at a special celebration of the music of Sir Lennox Berkeley in the composer’s presence.

He has lectured at many international festivals and summer schools in some twenty countries. His further travels and research have taken him to Russia, China, Mongolia, India, Australia, North, West, and South Africa, the Middle East, the Caribbean, South America and the Falkland Islands.
