Join Cambridge Society of North and West Yorkshire for a trip to the Auckland Project.

The Auckland Project is a unique collection of heritage attractions, galleries, gardens and parkland in Bishop Auckland, County Durham. The story of Bishop Auckland is one of faith, art and power, from the Prince Bishops of Durham to a surprising connection with the Golden Age of Spanish art.

Auckland Castle is one of the best-preserved Bishop’s palaces in the whole of Europe – home for a thousand years to England’s only Prince Bishops. For over 250 years, the castle was also home to Francisco de Zurbarán’s series of Spanish masterpieces, Jacob and His Twelve Sons; these striking paintings were the inspiration for the new Spanish Gallery.

We are planning a group visit to include the Castle, Gardens, Faith Museum and Spanish Gallery; more details in due course.

We have chosen the date so that anyone who wishes to can stay to see Kynren, an enthralling live summer family entertainment in which two thousand years of history, myth and legend rush by in 90 minutes: wars, magic, majesty, celebration and heartache are vividly brought to ground-shaking life in a dazzling outdoor-theatre spectacular. Please note that visits to Kynren are not part of the Cambridge Society event and must be booked separately.
