Situated in Ampfield, just outside Romsey, Sir Harold Hillier Gardens is an arboretum covering 180 acres and accommodating over 42,000 trees and shrubs - most notably an almost unparalleled collection of oaks, camellia, magnolia and rhododendron. Outstanding features include the splendour of the seasonal planting displays set in 180 acres, and home to the UK’s largest collection of Champion Trees – the biggest, rarest or oldest of their kind.

In 1953 the distinguished plantsman, Sir Harold Hillier, established the Gardens and Arboretum. Over many years he assembled a remarkable collection, with the aim to bring together the most comprehensive and unrivalled collection of trees, shrubs and hard hardy plants in the UK.

The Gardens were left under the sole trusteeship of Hampshire County Council in 1977. Run as a charity, the Gardens are continually developed to further Sir Harold’s philosophy of horticulture, conservation, education and recreation. 

We have arranged for a guided tour of the Gardens, which will begin at 3pm, so all guests should arrive by 2.30pm to park at the main entrance. The tour will finish by 4pm at Jermyns House, where we will have an initial glass of Prosecco followed by a buffet with a cash bar.

At 6pm we shall need to vacate Jermyns House and return to pick up cars at the main car park.

Anyone who so wishes will be able to visit the gardens individually prior to the guided tour.
