If, when driving down the A1, you have ever passed the distinctive silhouette of the Allerton Waste Recovery facility and wondered what goes on there, here is an opportunity to find out. Our tour begins at the Visitor Centre at 10am on Thursday 11th May.

Timings

  • A guided tour of Allerton Waste Recovery Park (AWRP), starting at 10.00 am.
  • Lunch at the Blue Bell at Arkendale.
  • A guided tour of Allerton Castle with tea/coffee and cake in the afternoon.

Leaving AWRP at about midday, we will drive the short distance to the village of Arkendale, to take lunch at the Blue Bell. The lunch menu will not be available until March but will include both hot dishes and sandwiches. Menus will be sent to those expressing interest in going and the Secretary (see below) must be informed of menu selections at the time of booking, with payment for lunch being made to the Blue Bell on the day of the event.

At 1.45 pm, we will drive to nearby Allerton Castle, a Grade 1 Victorian Gothic house. Here we will learn about the history of the Allerton estate and then take a guided tour of the main floor rooms, followed by tea/coffee and cake. If time and weather permit, we can then enjoy a walk in the garden before departure. (Please note: thin-heeled shoes are not allowed in the house).

The cost of £18.00 includes entrance and tour fees plus tea/coffee and cake following the afternoon tour. Lunch is to be paid for individually at the Blue Bell on the day.

This event was a sell-out when first planned for April 2020, only to be cancelled when the first lockdown intervened; so it was an easy decision to offer it again this year.

NOTE: The tour of Allerton Waste Recovery Park is limited to 20 people, so bookings will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis.

United Kingdom
Location information:

Allerton Waste Recovery Park (AWRP) is situated on the east side of the A1(M), off the A168 (what some people know as the old A1) where it runs between Jn. 47 and Jn. 48 of the A1(M). The Visitor Centre has its own car park and the postcode is HG5 0SD. Information about the visit, including directions to the Visitor Centre, will be sent to you when booking (see below).

Accessibility:

Please note the following:

  • AWRP need to know in advance about any mobility issues or hearing impairment.
  • The visit will take around two hours and involves a session in the visitor centre plus a short site tour. This involves a walk which is about 1km in total for the return trip. There is a set of 30 metal steps to climb, although there is a lift for those unable to climb them. They are only able to take one person per tour who would not be able to use the lifts in the event of a site evacuation.
  • It is essential to arrive with suitable footwear and clothing for an industrial site visit. This includes having thick soled shoes with no open toes and feet fully covered (no bare skin on the feet) – no high heels. Legs must also be covered, preferably by trousers, but leggings or similar are acceptable. Anyone unsuitably dressed will not be allowed on the site tour.
