Since the invention of the compound microscope more than 350 years ago the development of the optical microscope has driven, and continues to drive, some of the greatest discoveries in scientific history.

In this talk, Professor Kaminski will present the history of the light microscope from Robert Hooke’s time to modern instruments, introducing state-of-the-art techniques and demonstrating how microscope images continue to inspire scientific and public imagination. He will explain how they are used today in research of molecular mechanisms of disease.

Clemens Kaminski is a Professor of Chemical Physics at the University of Cambridge, where he leads the Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology. His research is dedicated to advancing optical microscope technologies to uncover the roots of diseases such as Alzheimer’s.
