The Mays - Twenty Three

Author: Emily Fitzell (Editor) Quentin Blake & Alison Turnbull

Publisher: Varsity Publications

Founded in 1992, THE MAYS publishes an annual selection of the best and most exciting new writing and artwork from students at the universities of Cambridge and Oxford. Each year invited guest editors — prominent authors, poets or artists — contribute a preface to the anthology and take part in the selection process.  THE MAYS has earned a reputation for picking out the brightest new artistic talent. Nick Laird was a former student editor. THE MAYS is also widely credited for launching the career of novelist Zadie Smith. Previous guest editors include Seamus Heaney, Ted Hughes, Steven Fry, Ali Smith, Philip Pullman, Jeanette Winterson, Jarvis Cocker, Nick Cave and Patti Smith.  This year’s anthology aims to encourage exchange between mixed sources of narrative. Alison and Quentin’s editorials, with their combinations of text and image, are a reflection of a curatorial intent to collapse categories and allow art and literature to converge.
