Solution

Redundant letters spell RESEARCH CHEMIST, HOOKING UP AUTHOR, CHASER, RANDALL’S PARTNER, giving SIDNEY STRATTON, TOM WOLFE, THE SINNERMAN and MARTY HOPKIRK, all famous for wearing WHITE suits. The non-conformist, HARRY RAYBURN, is one of the aliases of Agatha Christie’s titular The Man in the BROWN Suit.

Prize competition winners

Congratulations to the prize-winners of our crossword competition. The winner was Richard Cawkwell (Jesus 1970). The 2 runners-up were Nathan Horleston (Corpus Christi 1995) and Tim Sheldon (Jesus 1974).

The solution and prize-winners' names will also be published in print in CAM 104. Our winner, whose entry was the first correct one drawn, receives a £75 CUP book token and a signed copy of Neil Lawrence’s The Atomic Human. Our 2 runners-up receive a £50 CUP book token.

A Leisurely Pursuit by Nimrod

Solvers must find ways to connect four groups of three (including three nonstandard phrases) from realms – one group each – of history, geography, science/nature and entertainment. Wordplay in each of the normally numbered clues leads to the answer with an extra letter not entered in the grid.
