Walking in Patagonia
event 6 April - 18 April 2027 (12 days)
This tour visits areas of outstanding natural beauty and provides the opportunity to engage with local conservation experts who are deeply involved in ensuring the long-term preservation of the landscapes, fauna and flora. This is an active itinerary with daily walks, and excursions. It is supported by local bilingual guides and will be accompanied by Ed Paine, founder of Latin America specialist tour company Last Frontiers. The length of some walks can be adjusted but a good level of fitness is essential.
After a day in Santiago fly south to Chile’s Lake District, where the perfect snow-capped cone of Osorno volcano is reflected in the blue waters of Lake Llanquihue. Take an introductory walk and spend a day’s gentle kayaking in Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park, Chile’s oldest park. Explore the trails of the Pumalín National Park, a temperate rainforest zone with fjords, volcanoes, and a haven for the endangered alerce tree which lives up to 4,000 years. 3 full days are spent in Chile’s newest national park: Parque Patagonia, created thanks to the work and generosity of philanthropists Doug and Christine Tompkins. Wildlife includes herds of guanacos, 10% of the remaining world population of the southern Andean deer (huemul), armadillos, flamingos, foxes, condors and pumas.
