Join Professor Zeynep Yürekli-Görkay in a four-day visit to Istanbul, once a small Greek trading colony of Byzantium on the border of Europe and Asia and then to become the spectacular metropolis of Constantinople, city of the world’s desire for well over a thousand years.

The Christian Byzantine empire spanned the whole of the Middle Ages, from the fall of Rome to the Renaissance, and its monuments reflect its stunning magnificence. Justinian’s 6th century Church of Holy Wisdom, the Hagia Sofia, is one of the most resplendent in Christendom, with impressive architectural features and golden mosaics. But there are many other churches too, like the Church of the Chora, the interior decoration for which has been recovered almost intact. But from the middle of the 15th century, the city became the centre of the Ottoman Empire, the Sublime Porte, characterized by superbly designed mosques like the Suleymaniyeh and the beautiful 17th century Blue Mosque, with incredible mosaics. The Topkapı Palace exudes the atmosphere of the Ottoman sultans, such as Suleyman the Magnificent, and the museums there display the remarkable collections of Japanese and Chinese porcelain and imperial jewels.

No visit would be complete without calling into the Mısır Çarşısı, the Egyptian Spice Market, where all the flavours of the Orient permeate the air. Finally, a cruise up the Bosphorus features the famous skyline of Sultan Ahmet, the Old City.
