Benefit from the in-depth knowledge of Dr Andriananadrasana through his work in Madagascar, which includes 17 years for the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust’s Madagascar Programme.
This unique island was not inhabited by man until 2,000 years ago and enjoys the enormous variety of endemic fauna and flora. Time is spent in the pristine primary rain forest reserve of Perinet looking out for the 11 species of lemurs including indri, the largest lemur, as well as birds, chameleons and tree frogs. Ranomafana National Park was created in 1991 to protect the endangered golden bamboo lemur, only rediscovered in 1986. Besides red-fronted brown lemurs, red-bellied lemurs and the shy grey bamboo lemur, Ranomafana is a superb area for birders and numerous species of palms, bamboo and orchids thrive here.
Explore Isalo National Park, a dry massif of ‘ruiniforme’ sandstone, looking for ringtail lemurs or Verreaux’s sifakas, while the flora includes special palms and aloes. Visit the impressive indigenous baobabs on the way to the dry deciduous forest of Zombitse. Further baobabs and other flora can be seen in the spiny forest of the Reniala Botanical Garden. Here is an ensemble of drought-resistant plants such as Pachypodiums, Moringas, Hildergardia and Delonix. Birding is superb with long-tailed ground-rollers, Lafresnaye's vangas, sub-desert mesites, running couas and Archbold's Newtonia.
Enjoy free time at the beach in Ifaty facing the Mozambique channel. Visit the UNESCO heritage listed Royal Hill of Ambohimanga in Antananarivo and see the wonderful craft market which has beautiful fossil specimens for sale as well as baskets, woodcrafts and of course vanilla pods.
