On a balmy Thursday evening, 1 June, in San Diego, over 50 alumni and guests from Oxbridge, Harvard and Yale met in the first San Diego University Alumni Challenge. Teams from Oxford/Cambridge and Harvard/Yale went head-to-head for the Universities Challenge Belt, at the Shakespeare Pub and Grille.

Quizmaster Alex Moreno (Harvard J.D. 2008 and Cambridge (King’s) LL.M. 2007), posed a range of dastardly difficult questions, and the Shakespeare catered to our Anglophile cravings with excellent pub food and drinks.

After a closely fought battle the decision came to the last, best estimate question, which was “what is the dollar value of the combined endowments of Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard and Yale”. Team “Blue Belt” (one of the Oxford/Cambridge teams) guessed $80.5B when the correct answer was $78.5B, giving them a well-deserved win and captain Chris Richey the winner’s Universities Challenge Belt prize. A most enjoyable evening was had by all, and Harvard/Yale committed to organizing a rematch with the hope of wresting the Challenge Belt away from Oxford/Cambridge.
