Windermere - Lecture and buffet dinner
Of all icons arguably the Mother of God of Vladimir (Vladimirskaya in Russian) has become more closely associated than any other work of art (a loaded label in the present context) with the identity and history of a state or states. By means of a rich blend of faith, myth and fact, a vast edifice of legend and history has been constructed around it – a history which is far from over.
The focus of this lecture is on the cultural transformations the icon has undergone, in function and meaning and the ways in which it has been and is still viewed.
