Melbourne - Lunch with Dr Irene Gallego Romero
Melbourne - Lunch with Dr Irene Gallego Romero
Alumni and guests are invited to join the Cambridge Society of Australia (Victoria) and Dr Irene Gallego Romero - Genomes (or why you aren't related to your relatives) followed by lunch.
Apparently, your genes can determine what wines you will like (yes, really, there's a Californian outfit that tests your DNA and selects wines for you based on the results...they're called Vin-ome). Since the sequencing of the human genome 16 years ago, our understanding of the genetic nature of traits has been transformed. Genes not only predict height or weight but our risk of diseases and how we will respond or react to medication. As we pass one million human genomes in databases, there are risks to uncritically heeding the siren song of genetics. Irene will discuss what these technologies can and cannot deliver, why not all of us stand to gain from the precision medicine revolution, and why you're not actually related to most of your relatives, but you are to everyone else in the room.
