Harrogate - Annual Lunch with Guest Speaker
Harrogate - Annual Lunch with Guest Speaker
Alumni and guests are invited to join the Cambridge Society of North and West Yorkshire for their annual lunch, with guest speaker Miles Taylor, Professor of Modern History at the University of York.
We are delighted to welcome Miles Taylor, Professor of Modern History at the University of York. He joined the department in 2004, having studied history at the Queen Mary University of London, Harvard, and Cambridge and previously taught at Southampton, King’s College London, and Cambridge (where he was a research student at St John’s, a Research Fellow at Girton, and a Fellow of Christ’s). Between 2008 and 2014 he was seconded to the University of London as Director of the Institute of Historical Research. During 2014-16 he was the holder of a sabbatical Leverhulme Trust Major Research Award.
He is a member of the Research Advisory Committee of the National Portrait Gallery and sits on the editorial advisory board of the Journal of British Studies. He has previously served on the grants award panels of both the Economic & Social Research Council and the Arts & Humanities Research Council. Recently he was commissioned by Cambridge University Press to be the General Editor of its new five-volume History of Britain.
Prof Taylor's research focuses on 19th-century British history, especially radical politics and Chartism, the history of parliament in this period, the interaction between Empire and the political system and the historiography of Victorian politics and culture. The title of his talk to be given at the Annual Lunch will be announced closer to the event.
