Cumbria - Lecture and buffet dinner
This event is in the past.
Join members of the Cambridge Society (Cumbria) for a lecture entitled 'Diplomacy with Dictators: Milosevich and Mugabe' by Sir Brian Donnelly. This will be followed by drinks and a buffet dinner.
A pre-talk drink will be provided between 7pm and 7.30pm and the lecture will take place just after 7.30pm. There should also be an opportunity for some questions after the talk.
Sir Brian Donnelly KBE CMG is a retired British diplomat. He attended Workington Grammar School, Queen's College Oxford (1963–66) (Wyndham scholar, MA) where he also edited Cherwell), and the University of Wisconsin-Madison (MA).
He began working at GCHQ. and in 1973 moved to the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office. He served in the UK Mission to the UN, and then in Singapore, Athens, and NATO before being appointed as UK Ambassador to Yugoslavia, and later served as Ambassador to Zimbabwe. He has been an ambassador for this country through some very difficult times. The title of his talk is:-
'Diplomacy with Dictators: - Milosevich and Mugabe'.
Given recent developments in Zimbabwe, he may make some references to his experiences in that country.
After leaving the diplomatic service, he worked as a Special Advisor to the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs. In retirement he served on the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission and the Special Immigration Appeals Commission. He is an honorary fellow of the Queen's College Oxford.
He has retired back to his native Cumberland and become involved in a number of local societies. He is also a very good raconteur.
The Society has negotiated accommodation for Members and their guests who would like to stay at the hotel after the event, at a rate of £80.00 per person per night for bed and breakfast. If you would like to take advantage of this offer, please contact the hotel directly:
