Election for the Office of Chancellor

An election by the Senate for the new Chancellor of the University of Cambridge will take place in Cambridge on Friday 14 and Saturday 15 October 2011. All alumni holding the Cambridge MA or any other Cambridge Masters Degree, Doctorate, or the Cambridge BD Degree are eligible to vote, but must do so in person. There are four candidates for the Office of Chancellor and further information about eligibility, the process and the candidates will be available online in September.

CARO Events

Russell Group Alumni Drinks in the Union at Leeds
Wednesday 7 September
Cambridge alumni are invited to the Leeds University Union building, along with alumni from the other 19 Russell Group universities, for a drink in the Terrace Bar from 6.00pm – 7.30pm. Make it a date to meet up with old friends or to find out who else from your university now lives in Leeds. Alumni and Development staff from all Russell Group Universities will also be there.

Olympic Celebration Dinner, The Painted Hall, London - register your interest
Saturday 12 May 2012
Join Cambridge Olympians, the Vice-Chancellor and a number of special guests for an elegant black tie dinner, to be held in the magnificent Painted Hall, Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich, London.

The occasion will celebrate Cambridge sporting achievement and mark the forthcoming London Olympics.

9 - 11 September
Come and explore Cambridge's unique and interesting historical buildings this September, and take part in a wide range of walks, talks, tours, exhibitions, and special activities.

Discover University and College libraries, gardens, historic buildings, museums and chapels as well as civic chambers, graveyards, historic shops, and even aircraft hangars. Find out what events are available online.

Scudamore's Bat Safari
To coincide with the International Year of the Bat, Scudamore's is running weekly summer bat safaris towards Grantchester Meadows in partnership with the Wildlife Trust. From now until 9 September, these unique 90-minute tours led by a wildlife expert will depart shortly after dusk each Friday night.

Your knowledgeable guide will outline the notable characteristics and habitats of bats likely to be encountered on your trip and teach you how to use hand-held bat detectors.

Out of hours magic at the Botanic Garden
Low summer sun and warm evenings cast a magical glow over the Botanic Garden and this August, visitors can enjoy this wonderful place out of hours when the Garden stays open late on the first and third Wednesdays of the month.

Visitors might even be lucky enough to spot bats, the resident foxes and badgers, or a grass snake taking an evening swim!

Research

This month, the University of Cambridge is profiling research that addresses one of the biggest challenges of the 21st century – how to guarantee enough food, fairly, for the world's rapidly expanding population. What's more, if you have burning questions that you think the University can answer, you can send them to a panel of academics who specialise in research to do with food security. To get involved, all you have to do is email your question, preferably adding your name and where you come from.

As many questions as possible will be answered and the results will be published in August on the research website.

High-risk hearts: a South Asian epidemic
Why is heart disease increasing at a greater rate in South Asia than in any other region globally? Large-scale population studies in Pakistan and Bangladesh aim to discover the basis of a little-studied public health problem of epidemic proportions.

On Saturday 9 July at Murray Edwards, CARO welcomed 49 Alumni Group Leaders from around the world, to the 2011 Alumni Groups Global Leadership Conference (previously Insider Day).

We would like to say a big thank you to all those who attended this event and for anyone who helps run an Alumni Group, we would be delighted to see you at the 2012 Conference.

We are also delighted to say that the new edition of the Alumni Worldwide Directory, which features contacts for the Alumni Groups, has gone out to all overseas alumni with Easter CAM and is also available online.

Department of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics
On 1 August 2011 the new 'Department of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics' will be born out of the strengths of the Department of Linguistics and RCEAL. The website will be going live on that day, and alumni of both departments are encouraged to take a look. You will be able to access the website via a link from both the current RCEAL and Department of Linguistics websites.

New Department of Engineering alumni web pages
Keeping engineering alumni up-to-date with all the latest news and events within the department, the new alumni web pages are now available. These web pages also offer a way for alumni to stay in touch, get involved and give something back to the Department.

As the largest existing LinkedIn Group targeted at Cambridge alumni has shut down (owing to the Group Leader leaving LinkedIn), CARO has set up a new Group!
