Bregenz Opera Festival

Bregenz Opera Festival
Saturday 23 July & Sunday 24 July
Join David Pountney (St John's 1963) Artistic Director of the Bregenz Festival, British composer Judith Weir (King's 1973) and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir Leszek Borysiewicz, in the beautiful alpine city of Bregenz for a very special weekend at one of the world's finest music festivals.

Set against the spectacular backdrop of Lake Constance, Bregenz has excellent transport links and is a wonderfully informal festival suitable for both serious opera lovers and newcomers alike.

Cambridge Wordfest

Raj Shehadeh & Robert Macfarlane
Thursday 3 March
Cambridge Wordfest welcomes you to its first guest event with celebrated Palestinian writer Raja Shehadeh, along with his friend, acclaimed writer and academic, Robert Macfarlane. Robert and Raja will be in conversation about Raja's latest book 'A Rift in Time: Travels with my Ottoman Uncle' and about their shared passion for walking.

Cambridge Science Festival
The Cambridge Science Festival returns at the University from 14 to 27 March with over 150 free events for all ages.

Highlights include Dr Peter Wothers' explosive Chemistry lectures and leading scientists talking about subjects as diverse as obesity, stem cell research and the oil industry. Visit www.cam.ac.uk/sciencefestival for more information.

The Graham Storey Lecture 2011

The fourth lecture in the series will be given by Ian McEwan and is entitled 'The Levers of Fiction'. Taking place on Monday 7 March at 5pm, in Lady Mitchell Hall (Sidgwick Site); this is an open lecture but booking is advised. The lecture will be given by Professor Ellen Williams, BP Chief Scientist, Formerly Director of University of Maryland Material Research Science and Engineering Centre, and will be held in Lecture Theatre 0 in the Department of Engineering. Humanitas

CRASSH
The Humanitas Visiting Professor in Women's Rights 2011, Professor Nancy Fraser, will deliver three lectures and a concluding symposium during March 2011.

Lectures include; 'A Polanyian Feminism? Re-reading The Great Transformation in the 21st Century' on 8 March, and 'Between Marketisation and Social Protection: Ambivalences of Feminism in the Context of Capitalist' on 16 March. For more information please see the CRASSH website.

Closure of Fitzbillies
We are sad to report that Fitzbillies cake shop has now closed. Since 1922 it has been a favourite of undergraduates, local residents and visitors to Cambridge, and due to the current economic climate, the business has had to cease trading.

Two research programmes in the Faculty of Education are bringing new insight to the impact and implementation of education in developing countries.

Magical illuminations
Art historian Professor Paul Binski describes his ventures into the gold-embellished world of illuminated manuscripts.

Cambridge is a wonder-world for the study of medieval illuminated manuscripts. The Fitzwilliam Museum, the University Library and the Colleges possess treasures of international quality rivalling those in the British Library, or even the Vatican.

Forthcoming events for 2011 include; Cam10 drinks with Oxford10 and Harvard Business School recent alumni and an Oxford and Cambridge Society Dinner, plus lectures on 'E.T.S. General Notices

Statement on the process for agreeing the Undergraduate fee for the University of Cambridge
The University Council met on 14 February and discussed the issues of the tuition fee and access agreement. These will now be debated by members of the Colleges Committee on 19 February. Thereafter, members of the Regent House will have the opportunity to vote in a ballot.

Help the Scott Polar Museum be shortlisted for Museum of the Year Prize
The Polar Museum is in the running for the Art Fund Prize 2011, the UK's largest arts prize. It is among ten museums to be long listed for the prestigious £100,000 award, including The British Museum, the V&A and the Roman Baths Museum, and needs your votes. Vote online by 3 May.

BBC search for alumni contributors
The BBC are researching a documentary about the experiences of people who were at Cambridge in the late 1980s and early 1990s, and the effect their time at the University had on their lives. Anyone interested in contributing to the research, please contact the director at hannah.berryman@bbc.co.uk.
