2011 Swan Blues Cup in Perth

Here we see the finish line photo of the 2011 Swan Blues Cup, the annual Boat Race between the Cambridge and Oxford alumni of Perth, Australia, which takes place on the Swan River each November. It looks very close to a dead heat, but unfortunately Oxford on the near side stole victory by the narrowest of margins, to go 3-0 up in the series. History repeated itself in a curious way, as 11 years ago the “Boxing Kangaroo”, aboard which we see Cambridge cox Professor Ian Fitzsimons (Fitzwilliam 1984), crossed the finish line at the Sydney Olympics about the same microscopic distance behind Great Britain’s gold medal men’s eight. The boat is now owned by the local rowing club who host the event.

It wasn’t all doom and gloom for Cambridge, as our Goldie crew had earlier beaten Isis by a length and a half, and that series which was inaugurated last year now stands level at 1-1. Here Cambridge Society President Nick Suess (Caius 1966) receives the Goldie silverware from Lord Oxburgh, former President of Queens’ College. Other crew members in shot are Dr Mark Lee (Downing 2003), Joe Conway (Christ’s 1965), and Kevin Kerr (Emmanuel 2008).
