The 3rd Annual Oxbridge Musical Evening.
The 3rd Annual Oxbridge Musical Evening was held on February 12 at the Women’s Art Association on Toronto. Over 60 Alumni and their guests representing more than 20 universities enjoyed serious classical music such as Tim Field’s brilliant performance of Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata and Stephen Cockle’s hilarious treatment of Handel’s songs: “I melt, I rage, I burn” & “O ruddier than the Cherry”. Barry Clegg gave the World premiere of his humorous send up of a performer’s bio entitled “About the Artiste”. Janet Obermeyer delighted the audience again with gorgeous interpretations of the works of Mendelssohn, Fauré, Vaughan Williams and John Laing, Organ Scholar, Corpus, Cambridge. On the “jazzier” side, Katharine Rapoport played Gershwin’s Prelude #3 with John Laing and Maggie Norman sang Harold Arlen’s: “It’s only a Paper Moon” with Katherine at the piano. By popular request, this year’s program included two beautiful madrigals, which evoked dawn on May Day with the punts gliding by.
We would like to thank John Laing and Katharine Rapoport, both professional musicians, for preparing the program, rehearsing with the performers and giving freely of their time & talent. Thanks also to Milka, Lindsay, Liz & Rosemary who prepared and served the delicious food & wine and to Pacé of the Women’s Art Association who extended such a warm welcome to our Group.
