The Cambridge Society in Nottinghamshire

On Wednesday 1 September 2010, 36 members of the Cambridge Society in Nottinghamshire visited Southwell Minster in Nottinghamshire.

We were treated to a most interesting and engaging guided tour of the Minster by Canon David Keene (Trinity Hall 1953), formerly a Chancellor of Southwell Minster and a fount of knowledge about its history and place in the community.

In addition we were able to visit the Historic Chapter Library housed in the Minster, where the volunteer librarian, Brian Whitehouse (Selwyn 1952), had set up a display of the most interesting items in the library. These included a first edition of Dr Johnson's Dictionary and a copy of Isaac Newton's Principia Mathematica.

This was followed by a most excellent lunch at the nearby Saracen's Head Hotel and the visit was much enhanced by a lovely late summer day.
